Left to Right, Size Recognition
Posted on : October 29th, 2007

Today the children enjoyed another Spanish class with Sister where they continued to work on colors and counting. Back in the PreK classroom the children worked on a  lesson in left to right, and size recognition. The children worked through many steps within the lesson. First the children had to do some cutting, coloring and then arrange the pumpkins in a size sequence and in a left to right pattern. The final step was making the pumpkin headband.

Remember, tomorrow is the Halloween party!  Children should come in costume, please no weapons or masks.  Some of the children were worried about the masks, saying their costumes are incomplete without the masks. My major concern is safety  in walking on our parade route. If face paint can be substituted, that would be GREAT!

Remember, no school for students on Friday.

Is it Friday?

Curious George went home with Teddy this morning.

The children had a wonderful time in Computer this morning. They continue to TEACH me new things. We finished our ‘Shy Scarecrows’, come see them Monday in the hallway.

Thanks to all of you for supporting our Rake-a-thon in whatever way you could! Remember our Halloween Party on Wednesday – Now school for students on Nov. 2nd, and the upcoming Book Fair in November  at Barnes and Nobles – see you there!

And one more thing…

I need to have an official copy of your child’s shot records  for our School Health Office. Please look for this request on Friday in your child’s backpack. Your immediate  attention to this manner  is  required and appreciated, Thanks again.

We are getting SPOOKY!

The children finished their spider pockets this morning- -AWESOME! Be sure to take a look at these critters. The spiders will be left in the classroom until Halloween morning. I’m sure the GREAT SPIDER will be leaving some surprises in the spider pockets for the children. The children have also learned a Scarecrow rhyme, some told me that they have already frighten family members. Here are the words – the actions speak for themselves – Scarecrow, Scarecrow, turn around. Scarecrow, Scarecrow, touch the ground. Scarecrow, Scarecrow, look at your shoe. Scarecrow, Scarecrow, better say ‘BOO!”   The children love it and now you will too! Today the children also listened to the story,  “The Shy Scarecrow” by Mary Packard.

I am enjoying the opportunity to speak with each of you in regards to your little one’s growth in the Pre-K program. Thank you for giving of your time and sharing some insights with me. If you have not signed up for this conference time, please do so – I have sign up times in the classroom.

Remember Halloween is in one week!  The children may come to school dressed in their costumes for the morning party. Again, for safety reasons,  no weapons or masks are to be part of the costumes.

Parents, please remember our School’s Book Fair! This year the fair will be held at Barnes & Noble  in Maple Grove on  Saturday Nov. 17th from 11 to 4.  I will be reading a story to the gathered children sometime that afternoon. More details to  follow regarding time and story.

Have a wonderful evening!

Creepy Spiders
Posted on : October 22nd, 2007

Welcome back from a wonderful long weekend. I missed everyone!

We are getting into the Halloween spirit in Pre-K. Today the children painted paper plates which will eventually  become black spiders! We are  working with the letter ‘Pp’ for pumpkins,  and we  read “The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything” by Linda Williams – what a fun reading  for Halloween. The children went to PyEd this morning.

Our little ones are getting very excited about Halloween and YES, we do have a party!
I ask that the children come to class on Wednesday 10/31 in their costumes. The costumes should be child-friendly, no weapons or  masks that will scare me. We will play a few games,   I have a craft planned, we will decorate cookies,  and just have a very good time..   As always, you are welcome to come and join in the fun! I will probably give you a chore…

Picture Day
Posted on : October 17th, 2007

Picture Day was a success!  The children used their listening ears and followed directions perfectly!  The children listened to the story “The Alphabet Tree” by Leo Lionni, at skill time they made their own Alphabet Tree and used a variety of ‘abc’ stickers on their trees. They had the option of leaving them in the classroom for a class book or to take them home – home won out!

We are working in our Apple unit; learning about Johnny Appleseed, and the different types of apples. Today we tasted three varieties of apples:  Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, and Granny Smith. After tasting all three, each child had their own opinion of a favorite.

Remember, no school on Friday!  Have a wonderful long and safe weekend.  See everyone on Monday!

The Costume Shop is Open!
Posted on : October 15th, 2007

The Drama center in the classroom became the Costume Shop over the weekend. There is a wide variety of costumes and props the children may try on and ‘buy’. The children take turns being the shopper and/or the store cashier. To further enhance the shop, the costumes are worth a given price, the children must find that price on the given  plastic tag, then the cashier rings it up on the cash register. Please drop in on Wednesday and to see the Costume Shop. If you have any unused costumes from previous years that are still wearable I am taking donations!

The children cut fall leaves from the paintings they did on Friday. What great control and skill in cutting exercises!

The children went to Spanish this morning.

Remember: Wednesday is Picture Day and no school for students on Thursday and Friday. Conference dates and times are available in the classroom for you.

Painting Autumn Leaves
Posted on : October 12th, 2007

This morning the children used autumn colors to paint different strokes on white construction paper. The ‘master pieces’ will dry over the weekend, then on Monday morning the children will cut traced leaves from their finished work. We will be using these leaves to decorate a hallway tree. The children worked a little more on coloring the Halloween house. I will reconstruct the house and it will be used for a quiet spot in the classroom.  Two children at a time will be able to crawl inside and  read a book or work a small puzzle.  Our little ones also enjoyed Tech class this morning. Today they explored the program ‘A to Zap’ a very creative means of reinforcing the alphabet.

Conference sign-up sheets are in the classroom. Please sign up for a date that fits your schedule, if you need another day or time – just let me know.

Have a wonderful weekend with your family!

A Visit from the Firefighters
Posted on : October 10th, 2007

This morning the children were treated to a presentation on fire safety from New Hope’s Fire Inspectors. The children were also taken for a quick walking tour of the truck. Ask the children what they learned this morning from the presentation. Here are some conversation starters:  -smoke alarms, -all the equipment the firefighters need to wear to be safe themselves, – the need for families to have a safe gathering spot if they do have a home fire- and what does ’stop, drop, roll’  mean?

We also took some time to color (with markers) the classroom Halloween House. We will color a little more on Friday and then put the house back together.  The next few weeks the house will be set up in the classroom to be used for quiet activities.

Remember picture day is next Wednesday.

Pre-K Conference times will be held during the first two weeks of November.  If you would like to chit-chat about the progress (and fun) we are having, please sign up for a day and time – if you need other times, let me know.

Autumn Leaves are Falling
Posted on : October 8th, 2007

The children enjoyed a wonderful conversation this morning during Circle Time regarding Autumn. They are  very much aware of the  falling leaves and their colors, the change in temp., and the playfulness of the squirrels.

Today the children were introduced to the letter ‘L’  – for leaves. The children also enjoyed a very energetic time with Mr. J during Phy. Ed. They played several running games, marched around the gym, and played an ABC game. We also did our first entry into our Memory Books which the children will present to you at the end of their Pre-K year.
